iLs Focus™

The iLs Total Focus and Focus 200 are portable auditory training systems designed to be used for home, school or corporate use.

The iLs Focus listening training program uses gating to exercise the middle ear muscles for better focus and less background noise interference, filtration to retrain the brain to hear the differences in speech sounds and to strengthen the body’s coordination, and bone conduction headphones to accelerate the therapeutic effects of the listening training program. The Integration Kit activities combine the listening, visual, motor and balance parts of the brain. “Neurons that fire together, wire together.”

All Focus™ systems are sold complete with the following:

iLs Kick Start™

The iLs Kick Start is a portable auditory training system designed for home, corporate or home use.

The auditory training program can be shortened or lengthened depending on the user’s needs. The progression of the frequency filtration is more gradual than the programs on the Focus. The sequence of the filtered music takes the listener through the Sensory Motor Phase, Communication Phase and the Integration Phase. As with the Focus, the iLs Kick Start music has gating to exercise the middle ear muscles and filtration to retrain the brain.

All Kick Start™ systems are sold complete with the following:

• 12-week program which can be shortened or lengthened per user needs progresses gradually through the sensory motor, speech/language, and integration bandwidths 4GB Nano iPod with armband
• Sennheiser EH-350 air conduction headphones
• Integration Kit (see description below) for visual-motor and balance activities while listening; Playbook user guide includes graphics and descriptions to help users do the movement activities that complement the listening component

The frequency filtration progression of the Kick Start is gradual and safe. Music processing methods are identical to those of all other iLs professional systems

Integration Kit™

The Integration Kit and Playbook, which are included with the iLs Focus and iLs Kick Start, enhance the efficacy of the listening component. In the case of the Kick Start the physical activities provide important vestibular stimulation which is not provided by the headsets. (All iLs systems except the Kick Start have bone conduction, an effective vestibular stimulator built into the headsets.) The balance activities help compensate for the lack of bone conduction in the Kick Start, improving results significantly. The Integration Kit and Playbook are sold only in conjunction with iLs listening systems, and are not available separately.

iLs Interactive Language Program™

The Interactive Language Program is designed to help children and adults improve various auditory processing skills such as phonemic awareness, auditory memory, auditory figure- ground and dichotic listening (listening to two different words or sentences at the same time). The 10 functional exercises in the program are played from an Apple Nano. The volume for both the listener and the monitor (parent or client) is controlled through an iLs amplifier and headphone system.

The activities are presented in gradually increasing levels of difficulty, and a worksheet allows one to track performance and focus in on specific areas that need improvement. The equipment is purchased separately from the iLs listening systems listed above.

The Interactive Language Program can be purchased or it can be leased for 2 weeks.

Middle Ear Muscles

During listening training, music is modified in a special way, so that two little muscles in the ear are exercised. The muscles are instructed by the brain to move the position of the hammer and stirrup over and over as they tune in to surprising frequency changes in the music. As the muscles strengthen, listening becomes more focused and background noise is tuned out. Children and adults become more attentive listeners and no longer complain about having trouble listening in a noisy environment.

Auditory Processing

Over time, frequencies are gradually removed and then added to the music during the listening training. This process is called filtering. The auditory system in the brain becomes trained to discriminate among the individual frequencies in the music, which allows the discrimination of speech sounds. Thus, auditory processing (the ability to understand what others are saying) improves.

Sensory Integration

Listening plays a role in brain development and organization. Sound energy encourages new pathways to grow in the brain. These pathways connect the various parts of the brain together such as the centers for vision, movement and balance, touch, taste, listening, speech and emotions. Sensory integration (the senses working together) allows for such skills as eye-hand coordination, spatial orientation, reading, concentration, bowel and bladder control, mood, memory, eye contact, and toleration of touch/sound.
